Does Your Company Have Broccoli In Its Teeth?

I feel confident in saying that I have seen it all when it comes to advertising campaigns. I have seen clever, award winning campaigns and I have felt literal pain when I look at campaigns that have fallen painfully short on hitting the mark; painfully.  That being said I feel a commitment to each and every client to provide fresh, creative campaigns that are unique and second-to-none. Period. On the other hand, as a human being I feel that it is my purpose to tell you when you are missing the mark with your marketing efforts.  Just like if you had broccoli in your teeth and no one told you, I feel that it is the humane thing to do to tell you if your website is making your company look passé, cliché, or like every other Tom, Dick and Harry Company.

Equally important as the words on your website are the visual elements. Photos can position you as forward-thinking and creative; alternatively, if not chosen wisely they can portray your company as backward and tired. Why would you want the same old cliché photos and copy that is seen on everyone else’s websites? The following images and phrases are the worst of the worst. If you have them on your site, I’m begging you to remove them… immediately. They are the broccoli in your teeth, the toilet paper on your shoe and the price tag hanging out of the shirt you wore to work today all rolled up in one.

WE KNOW BUSINESS

Shaking Hands is Fun

What does it mean? Does it mean that two male handshakes plus a globe is the international sign for “we are all about the biz”? Whatever it means this image is all over the internet and it tops the list of bad messages. Please remove this image and replace with a picture of Stan from accounting or Lisa in Human Resources; these are the people that know your business so showcase them.  Additionally if you have the catch phrases that include but are not limited to:

“We are the force behind your business…..”

“Your single source for business strategies” or

“Our handshake means something”

….take them off your site. Please.

WE ARE SMARTER THAN YOU

strategy

cube

Is this telling us that your company is the missing piece to the puzzle or that you are going to collectively beat me at a fierce game of Scrabble? These cliché images paired with catch phrases that need to literally be spelled out for your consumers are not the answer to any website…ever. So say goodbye to the word games, puzzle pieces and Rubix cubes. No one likes pretentiousness. Replace these with real photos of your work, your products or your services. Additionally if you are spelling out anything like the following words nix them off your site:

T-E-A-M

S-T-R-A-T-E-G-Y

M-A-R-K-E-T-I-N-G

WE- A-R-E- C-O-O-L

WE HIRE YOUNG, BEAUTIFUL, ETHNIC PEOPLE…AND ONE OLD GUY

Ethnic TeamWe understand the need for equal opportunity but all this picture is implying is that you were recently in a discrimination suit or are too scared to be deemed politically incorrect. Great companies such as yours hire according to ability and it should be shown through real pictures of your team. Chances are that unless you are a company that deals in placing runway models your staff consists of real people with their own uniqueness to boast. So get ready to say “cheese” we do want to see real pictures of you and your employees and we don’t want to see phrases like:

“There is no “I” in team”

“Together we stand”

“United as one”

WE ARE SUPER DUPER GOOD AT GRAPHS blue business graph

This graph and other similar images are frequently found on financial, mortgage and banking sites but what exactly is this graph saying? “We don’t have real number so show you but this graph…that is on our competitor’s site too…. will surely impress you!”

Replace images of graphs with real people, real numbers and real results. Case studies, current news or anything with clear and concise content will keep your audience’s attention.

Phrases to avoid:

“Because Life is hard….”

“We bank on it…”

“Investing in YOU”

WE DEFINE COOL extra cool team

We are so cool and cutting edge that we strike these poses every day right after we work on our team cheers. (Look at the blonde—now she REALLY knows what she is doing!) This image says: “Having cool people like us, like totally, means we deliver results…like ok?” My advice: time to take off the “cool” pictures. Additionally if you have any acronyms or cheers that you learned at your last Cool Team Building Retreat keep them out of the copy:

T- Together!

E- Everyone!

A- Achieves!

M- More!

or

TOGETHER we stand, TOGETHER we fall, TOGETHER we win, and winners take ALL! YAY!

ARE YOU CALLING ME STUPID?man scratching head

What does this picture mean?

That you don’t get “it: or that I don’t get “it”?

I am confused.

Whichever message you are trying to get across— you either insulted yourself or me. Please take this image off or any similar images… and while you are at it take off any messaging such as:  “The Solution Finders” “Eureka!” or “Huh?”

__________________________

As you can see putting together a quality website is not a simple task; it takes hours of writing, editing, careful imagery selection and a lot of invested time and resources into making sure that you are properly showcasing your company. If you are setting off on the journey of creating a new website remember to stay away from quick, fix-it solutions with cheesy stock photos and cliché marketing messaging; this will only hurt your company’s image. Stick with the imagery and company messaging that is unique to your company—by doing so you set yourself apart and ahead of your competition.

Brace Yourself…Facebook Changes are Coming!

LMS Agency Inc.Just when we finally got used to the newest personal profile layout from Facebook it has been announced at the 2011 f8 conference that there will be major changes in Facebook’s layout…and in the very near future.

The soon to be released Facebook changes are called “Timeline”.  When Timeline is officially rolled out, your personal profile will be organized in reverse chronological order, as a “timeline” of your life, comparable to an online scrapbook. As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg says, “Timeline is the story of your life… in a new way to express who you are.”

The new Timeline profiles have only been released thus far to registered Facebook application developers.  The only people that can see the Timeline changes are other developers that have opted to change to the Timeline profile themselves. Additionally there is no set date as to when the general public should be expecting access to the new Timeline profiles.

So we can’t walk you through something that you can’t exactly see yet but what we can do is give you a sneak peak of what the new profiles are going to look like. The biggest, most exciting change you are going to see is the Timeline Cover Photo an 851px x 315px canvas that you can fill with the image of your choice.  In the lower left corner of the Cover Photo is where your profile picture will go.

Here are some of our favorite creative picks that we found via Social Media Examiner of what capabilities you can expect with your personal profile in the very near future.

Let us know what you think of the new layout!

________________________________________________

Obviously we had to start with the founder of Facebook. No offense, it’s cute but come on Mark…you can do better than this!

mark zuckerberg

kelly cromwellThere is nothing worse than having a great picture of yourself but it’s lacking other family and friends. Here is one designer’s take on how she can incorporate Dad into the picture without having to go with a different picture of herself.

ET Phone Home

Giuseppe Draicchio showed his creative side by phoning home. Just another example of how creative you can get with the new Facebook platform layouts.

ekkapong

Looks like Ekkapong Techawongthaworn has got the hang of the new pages. My guess is that this process was easier than the spelling of his name!

Hugh BrissHere is LMS’s Agency Inc.’s personal favorite…Hugh Briss has found the perfect balance between work and pleasure!

gian marcoAnd last but not least here is one last example of the creative ways that you can turn your new, personal Facebook page into a work of art.

So what do you think of the new layout?
How do you think you will use the new layout to your advantage?
Do you think you will implement the changes yourself or look to a social media agency to help you through the process?

Am I Really That Easy to Read?

LMS Agency IncI recently came across this Twitter generator site. It scanned my past posts, trends and personality and provided me with what they think my next tweet would be by mixing up my past posts.  Although some of these posts ( a few hundred) came out too jumbled to even understand there were some that were sadly accurate. I am guessing for the average person that their generated posts may say “Good Morning” and “Happy Friday!” but sadly this was not the case with mine.

Here are some of my posts that were generated by Yes That Can Be My Next Tweet and quite frankly it is pretty hard to argue with some of these.

No worries, after reading these you have full permission to un-follow me.

  1. Crying while yelling Total Eclipse of the Heart at the top of my lungs at LA Fitness!
  2. NO panic like the panic you feel when you are pulling an article of clothing over your head and get stuck.. YEAH I WAS BORN!.. come to peace with the fact that they will find you like this…in all your shame.
  3. I suppose the macarana and one green been was invented so we have something to do during the recession?
  4. At what age do we tell the Kiwanis club they are adopted? My other sister Ho-Cha-Chu-Chu looks nothing like me…Tick-Tock my little Clarices!
  5. I reject your faves with all my sleeves. xoxo
  6. I subscribe to me to keep me alive. YOU are out of the circle of trust.
  7. The only ironic thing about that adult thing is that there is no algebra involved.
  8. I’m thinking trapeze artists, fire-flame throwers…too tame? : I’m at Balboa Dog Park – Morley Field 2221!
  9. Hey it’s all about timing…and for you that join the Dumb Blonde train…I am pleased to introduce Ms. Scout.
  10. If I survived the Leah Sadowski…I would market it. T-shirts for everyone!
  11. Who doesn’t love advice? I am cool! Scout drools.
  12. I talk. A lot. Send Strawberry Ice cream. It’s been broughten.
  13. I am at your professional profile. New, improved version please?
  14. I am thinking re-brand. Fly girl in Dad Jeans at the dog park. Do it!
  15. Interestingly enough I reject AT&T, Cougar Town’s famous wine glass and fanny packs…
  16. He’s so awesome. I want him to live in my closet. Viva!
  17. Of course I love you. “You know your Grandfather didn’t really think you were going to make anything of yourself….” Corndog??

You see, they may not make sense to you but in a sick, twisted, quite amusing way they make sense to me. It just may have sparked more twisted posts; you just never know! So don’t click that un-follow button yet–or at least before you go tell me some of your funny post generators.

Taking the Show on the Road?

Social Media for Business

Taking the Show on the Road

Let’s face it. Social media is everywhere.  Whether you are one of those few left that are still resisting the new ways of the world or if you are someone that is on top of their social game, just because you are away from the office doesn’t mean that you have to lose out on social marketing opportunities.  Listed below are some top ways to enhance your social experience when you are traveling for business if you don’t see a platform that you use and love tell us about it in the comments below!

Before you go….

Just like you would check that you packed everything in your suitcase make sure that you cover all your bases on your social networks so you can get the most out of your business travel experience.  Tap into your Twitter, Linked-In Facebook and Plaxo networks and explore who will be in town, what is happening in the area and find details and deals on where you are staying.  Remember that you control what other people see so if you don’t want the whole world to know your whereabouts, we recommend you send a private message.  If you do not have all of the recommended social networks covered below it’s recommended that you download them, familiarize yourself with them and do a sweep/search of your email account to start building your network.  Remember that social media for business is about engagement with your target market and your network. So start the conversation, listen to your network and react accordingly via your social platforms in real-time.

Check List:

There are hundreds of social platforms. It is important that you find the platforms that you prefer before your trip, download them, familiarize yourself, make sure that all of your profiles are updated and start to build your network. Here are some platforms that you should tap into before you leave out of town on your business trip:

Location Based Platforms:

Travel-Specific Platforms:

Photo-Sharing Platforms:

Top Business Platforms:

Meet Ups

You Tube

Customer Generated Review Sites

While You Are Gone…

Facebook, Twitter, Linked-In, Plaxo: Keeping on top of your travels and meetings via posts is a great way to keep the online conversation going. Not only is it recommended to post your travels and happenings but also tap into your network on their knowledge of the area and their recommendations. Posting pictures and short videos is also great way to enhance the documentation of your trip.

Four Square, Gowalla, Scvngr, Facebook Places: Whether you are looking to find something to do, looking to meet up with friends or just want to share your travels with those back home these location based, social sites are fun and interactive ways to share your travels, learn of new specials or get deals on dining and entertainment directly from the GPS on your phone.  The reward in using these platforms is two-fold: you have the reward of discovering something new and you have the opportunity to connect with more people—thus growing your network.

Trip-It: With Trip-It you can organize trip details into one master online itinerary.  You can include directions, maps and weather, book restaurants, entertainment tickets and activities as well as check-in for flights and share your travel plans with others.  Organization is crucial when traveling and the Trip-It application is seamless in its programming and easily linked to your social sites like Linked-In. Once you trip is in full swing Trip-It is an invaluable resource. You can find confirmation numbers, store all of your frequent flyer miles, itineraries and travel information. If you upgrade to the Trip-It Pro you can also be alerted of delayed flights and important information leading up to your flights and travel.

Meet-Up: Check out the local Meet-Ups and conventions that are happening in the area that you may coincide with your travel plans. If there are no events happening try reaching out to someone in your industry for a cup of coffee or visit. A handshake and putting a face to the name can go a long way in the professional world.

Flckr, PhotoBucket, Fotki, Smug Mug: Utilizing photographs during your travels is all about creating a visual accompaniment to whatever you are sharing and it also increases your visibility and reach. Search for groups that are applicable to your professional interests, commented on other photo’s which relate to your business, tag your photos and make sure to write good titles for your photos to ensure traffic to your uploads.

You Tube: Short clips and video are always a great way to optimize your online presence, showcase your meeting or event or just say a word or two about your trip. Think of it as a video diary or a compliment to your posts.  When video is tagged and linked appropriately it can generate more traffic than written content alone.

Foodspotting, UrbanSpoon, and Yelp: Your industry may not be in food reviews but the entire purpose behind social marketing is that it is “social”.  If you are new in town or unfamiliar with the area, relying on others that know the area may point you in the direction of where to go for dinner or where to have a cup of coffee with your clients.  Maybe you had a great experience at the restaurant where you had your last business meeting and you want to let the world know. Maybe it was at the coolest new place in town and you held an event showcasing your new product—whatever the case letting your voice be heard will spark the conversation, potentially brand you as the expert or person to listen to or even grow your network. A big part of business travel consists of business lunches and dinners and unfortunately you can’t always depend on the concierge at your hotel to point you in the right direction. With mobile apps such as Foodspotting, UrbanSpoon, and Yelp, you can find a restaurant through fellow reviewers all the meanwhile you explore your new destination.

Home Sweet Home

The most important part of any business trip is the follow up after you have returned home.  If done correctly your posts and interactions should serve as a timeline to your entire trip.  Once you return post that you are home, write a blog about the entire trip if you want to summarize the adventure and most importantly remember to reach out to the new people you met along the way. Unless you actually take the time to return e-mails, connect with the people that you interacted with on-line and off-line and continue to maintain these relationships interactively you’re losing part of the extension of the relationship, a crucial key to extending and maintaining business relationships in social media.  No matter where you go or where you return to-by implementing social media into your business travels you will grow your network, reach and business. Safe Travels!

What social platforms do you use when traveling for business?
